Why do crankshafts use bearing shells instead of ball bearings

2023-09-22

1. Low noise
The contact surface between the bearing shell and the crankshaft is large, the average pressure is small, and there is sufficient oil film, so the operation is not only smooth but also low in noise. The steel balls inside the ball bearing will produce greater noise during movement.
2. Small size and convenient installation
The crankshaft has a unique shape, making it difficult for other bearings to cross the crankshaft and install in a suitable position. The bearing shells are more convenient to install and occupy less space, which is beneficial for reducing engine volume.

3. Can provide a certain degree of axial freedom
Because the crankshaft will expand due to heat during engine operation, causing it to produce a certain displacement in the axial direction. For ball bearings, axial force can cause eccentric wear, which may lead to premature bearing failure, and the bearing shells have wider degrees of freedom in the axial direction.
4. Large contact area for fast heat dissipation
The contact area between the bearing shell and the crankshaft journal is large, and the engine oil continuously circulates and lubricates during operation. Moreover, a large amount of oil flows through the contact surface, which can quickly remove excess heat and improve the stability of engine operation.
