Chromium plating, a process that makes metals shine!

2023-05-24

Chromium plating is a process of electroplating a thin layer of chromium on a metal. Chromium plating has two main functions, used for decoration or as a protective layer.

Usually, chromium has stable chemical properties and does not react with most organic acids, sulfides, or alkalis. Therefore, chromium plating can prevent corrosion, improve wear resistance, and serve as a protective layer.

In addition, the chrome layer has a high surface finish and is commonly used as decorative components, such as automotive instruments, interiors, decorative parts, and other components with appearance requirements.

The process of chromium plating includes five basic stages:
The first stage is degreasing. Use chemicals to remove grease from metal surfaces to ensure that there are no components on the surface that affect electroplating.
The second stage is cleaning. Thoroughly cleaning the surface helps to remove dirt and residues, such as small dust particles.
In the third stage, the underlying (plated) metal needs to be treated to ensure that the metal surface is as smooth as possible, thereby ensuring that the coating maintains high integrity for a longer period of time. The commonly used methods include copper plating, nickel plating, and then chromium plating.
In the fourth stage, the metal is placed in a container containing a pre-treatment solution and gradually heated to a suitable temperature to begin chromium plating.
The fifth and final stage, the electroplating process begins, and the solution in the container is a mixed solution of chromium containing compounds, allowing the compounds to be etched onto the metal surface (through electrochemical reactions). The thickness of the coating depends on the time the metal stays in the container.
Common types of chromium plating include: bright chromium plating, matte chromium plating, hard chromium plating, etc.
When prepared according to current industry standards, the chrome coating can withstand prolonged exposure to air. The metal bumper on a car is a good example of electroplating, which can be used for decades with only general maintenance. Similarly, faucets and other chrome plated products can ensure a long-term smooth appearance while also ensuring long-term durability. Therefore, chromium plating is also one of the most commonly used metal surface treatment processes.
