Common piston ring surface treatment process

 1. Chrome plating
Generally, the surface and end face of the first ring are chrome-plated, and other piston rings can also be chrome-plated. Large marine diesel engine piston rings are not chrome-plated, and cylinder liners are chrome-plated. At present, a chrome-ceramic composite coating piston ring has been developed, and the test shows that the wear amount is less than half of that of the chrome-plated piston ring, and the wear amount of the corresponding cylinder liner is also reduced.

2 spray molybdenum
Molybdenum sprayed layer has better wear resistance, copyability and tensile cylinder resistance than chrome plating. Chrome-plated steel cylinder liner and molybdenum-sprayed piston ring can form a good friction pair.

3 surface hard coating
The commonly used hard layers for piston rings are aluminum oxide, titanium oxide and chromium oxide, mainly aluminum titanate coating.





4 Ion implantation method
The ion implantation method combines selected chemical elements into a bundle into the cylinder liner and piston ring surfaces. The injected ion layer is integrated with the surface of the cylinder liner and piston ring, and has little effect on the surface roughness and dimensional accuracy. There are mainly plasma plating TiN diffusion layer, surface ion plating CrN hard film, rare earth ion carburizing and so on. Experiments show that quenching and tempering the piston ring and then nitriding the surface of rare earth ions can significantly improve the wear resistance of the piston ring and greatly prolong its service life.

5 Surface moisturizing treatment
Surface lubrication treatment is to chemically form a metal compound film on the surface of iron, steel and powder metallurgy materials to play a self-lubricating role. There are mainly steam phosphating treatment film formation and alkaline oxidation treatment film formation, which are used for lamination of piston rings and cylinder liners of small internal combustion engines. In addition, liquid nitriding and soft nitriding can also improve the wear resistance of iron cylinder liners.

6 Composite processing
The wear resistance of the friction pair is affected by a variety of factors, so the surface is increasingly treated with multiple wear resistance. For example: solution fire and sulfurizing, carburizing quenching and sulfurizing, soft nitriding and sulfurizing, nitroxide and combination of chrome plating and molybdenum spray.
