Pros and cons of turbo engines

2023-02-10

The turbo engine can use the turbocharger to increase the air intake of the engine and improve the engine power without changing the displacement. For example, a 1.6T engine has a higher power output than a 2.0 naturally aspirated engine. The fuel consumption is lower than the 2.0 naturally aspirated engine.

At present, there are two main materials for the engine block of a car, one is cast iron and the other is aluminum alloy. No matter what material is used, it has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, although the expansion rate of a cast iron engine is small, it is heavier, and its heat conduction and heat dissipation are worse than that of an aluminum alloy engine. Although the aluminum alloy engine is light in weight and has good thermal conductivity and heat dissipation, its expansion coefficient is higher than that of cast iron materials. Especially now that many engines use aluminum alloy cylinder blocks and other components, which requires some gaps to be reserved between the components during the design and manufacturing process, such as between the piston and the cylinder, so as not to cause the gap to be too small after high temperature expansion .

The disadvantage of this approach is that when the engine is started, when the water temperature and engine temperature are still relatively low, a small part of the oil will flow into the combustion chamber through these gaps, that is, it will cause oil burning.

Of course, the current engine manufacturing technology is very mature. Compared with naturally aspirated engines, the oil burning situation of turbocharged engines has been significantly improved. Even if a small amount of engine oil will flow into the combustion chamber, this amount is very small. of. Moreover, the turbocharger will also reach a very high temperature under working conditions, and it is cooled by oil, which is the reason why the turbocharged engine uses a slightly larger amount of oil than the naturally aspirated engine.
