Classification by the structure form at the top of the piston
① flat top piston: suitable for pre-combustion combustion chamber for carburetor engine and turbocurrent combustion chamber for diesel engine.The advantage is easy to manufacture, the top bears uniform heat distribution, and small piston quality. 
② concave top piston: can improve mixture liquidity and combustion performance for diesel or some gasoline engines.The advantage is the easy to change the compression ratio and combustion chamber shape.   
③ convex top piston: in order to improve the compression ratio, generally suitable for low-power engines.

By the structure of the skirt
① skirt slot piston: suitable for engines with small cylinder diameter and low gas pressure.The purpose of slotting is to avoid expansion, also known as an elastic piston.
② skirt unslotted piston: mostly used in the engines of large tonnage trucks.Also known as a rigid piston. 

Classification by piston pin
① piston where the pin seat axis intersects the piston axis. 
② piston pin seat axis perpendicular to the piston axis.
