What is the difference between a fully supported crankshaft and a non-fully supported crankshaft

2021-04-09

Fully supported crankshaft: The number of main journals of the crankshaft is one more than the number of cylinders, that is, there is a main journal on both sides of each connecting rod journal. For example, the fully supported crankshaft of a six-cylinder engine has seven main journals. The four-cylinder engine fully supported crankshaft has five main journals. This kind of support, the strength and rigidity of the crankshaft are better, and it reduces the load of the main bearing and reduces the wear. Diesel engines and most gasoline engines use this form.

Partially supported crankshaft: The number of main journals of the crankshaft is less than or equal to the number of cylinders. This type of support is called a non-fully supported crankshaft. Although the main bearing load of this type of support is relatively large, it shortens the overall length of the crankshaft and reduces the overall length of the engine. Some gasoline engines can use this type of crankshaft if the load is small.
