What You Don’t Know About The Engine Crankshaft

2021-12-08

What does the crankshaft do? The main function is to convert the heat energy of gasoline combustion in the car into rotating mechanical kinetic energy through the connecting rod crank mechanism, output to the gearbox, and finally transfer the energy to the wheels to drive the car.

In addition, the functions of the crankshaft include:

1. Conveyor oil lubrication and cooling connecting rod and piston pin.
The oil pump inside the engine pumps the oil in the oil pan through the pre-processed oil hole inside the crankshaft, and transports it to the connecting rod and piston pin friction parts, lubricates and cools them, and takes the production debris during the movement. go.
2. Balance the vibration of the engine
The more high-end cars, the less vibration the engine runs and the smoother the operation. This is in addition to the accident that the crankshaft itself is designed with a balance weight structure, and a pair of balance crankshafts are directly driven under the crankshaft. They are connected with the crankshaft through gears and have a strict phase relationship. The rotation direction of the pair of crankshafts is opposite, and the speed is twice that of the crankshaft.

3. Transmit the speed and angle information of the crankshaft, that is, reflect the angle information of each cylinder.
The engine's ECU (Electronic Central Control Unit) can control the timing difference of the camshaft through this angle information, adjust the opening time of the intake and exhaust valves; calculate the opening time of the fuel injection nozzles in each cylinder, so as to increase torque and reduce emissions. Effect.

4. Drive other parts of the engine to rotate.
For example, the timing sprocket or timing belt pulley drives the camshaft to rotate; drives the generator to run, drives the water pump to run; drives the water tank fan to run, drives the car air conditioner to run, etc., which are the source of power for other operating components.
5. The crankshaft is still running while stirring the oil in the oil pan to cool and flush the crankshaft chamber.
In addition to lubricating the inner wall of the cylinder, it can also cause the internal heat of the engine to be taken away by the splashing oil and dissipate through the oil pan and the engine block. go out.
